Get to Know Sarah

What do you enjoy most about birth and postpartum doula work?

I have been fascinated by pregnancy and childbirth since I was a very young girl. My own experiences both personally and professionally have only heightened that fascination and extended it on to postpartum care as well. With laboring mothers, I love relieving their uncertainty and anxieties, creating calmness, and providing them with the confidence and  encouragement they need to implement their birth plan and have the most fulfilling experience possible. And I also love helping families tackle those early postpartum hurdles and truly enjoy time with their new baby. I have expertise in common infant problems, such as breastfeeding challenges, reflux, milk or soy protein intolerances, and lip and tongue ties. Happy babies create confidence in new parents, and it’s an honor to be a part of their journey.

Tell us about yourself and your family…

I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 14 years. We have an amazing 6-year-old son and a sweet 3-year-old daughter. We love to be active together – we spend weekends hiking in the Metroparks, creating art at The Beck Center in Lakewood, and trying new local restaurants on the west side. The boys enjoy playing tennis and my daughter and I love baking together, often making homemade cookies from scratch. I also design and sew my own custom handmade ring sling carriers for newborns.

What’s your favorite dish to cook for your postpartum clients?

I make the best lasagna ever! I think if clients could taste my lasagna at the consult they would hire me on the spot.

Who is a hero of yours?

My hero is my mother-in-law, who recently passed away after battling an aggressive cancer. She overcame many difficulties in life, beginning with the death of her father and mother at age 16, in a tragic car accident which she survived in the backseat. She battled cancer multiple times, while raising three children and maintaining a career in business performance management. She fought hard, remained positive, and put everyone and their needs before herself, despite what she was going through. She taught me how to be a strong woman, wife, and mother.

Favorite CLE restaurant?

Our favorite restaurant is White Oaks in Westlake – a local treasure with a shady past. It opened in 1928 and was a speakeasy during Prohibition, where it provided some of the most notorious Clevelanders with illegal liquor that was ferried in nightly from Canada. The walls are covered with black-and-white photos from its storied past and they still have its original door with a peep-hole entry.

What are you currently watching on Netflix?

I’ve been hooked on The Crown, which tells the story of young Queen Elizabeth II, as she takes the crown after her father’s death. It’s fascinating to see how she took on such an incredible responsibility at such a young age. On the lighter side, I’m loving Santa Clarita Diet, a silly comedy starring Drew Barrymore as a suburban zombie mom and realtor. It’s hilarious!
